Rather than aggressively resurfacing the face, we chose a minimalist restoration, respecting the anvil’s history and maintaining its hardened working surface.
When this 455 lb North German Double Horn Anvil arrived, the top working face was heavily pitted from decades of use and exposure. Instead of performing an extensive grind that would unnecessarily remove valuable hardened steel, we carefully removed less than 1/8 inch of material. This conservative approach eliminated the majority of the damage while preserving the anvil’s original integrity.
Just as importantly, the face was not ground perfectly flat. Like the finest German anvils when they left the factory, we restored it with a slight crown, maintaining the original forging geometry that many experienced blacksmiths prefer. The result is a smooth working surface across most of the face, with only a small section retaining some light pitting as a reminder of the anvil’s long working life.
The edges of this 455 lb North German Double Horn Anvil show moderate wear and damage in places, consistent with an anvil that spent decades in active service.
